Solid Multimedia Laptop
I was looking for a machine to replace my old toshiba satellite from my school years and after a lot of searching ended up buying the ASUS N61JV-X2.
Pros:
-Large size means I am not squinting to see things and my fingers are not cramping
-Build quality is quite sturdy (Aluminum macbook is probably the only thing sturdier)
-Core i5, 4GB ram and discrete graphics for ~$1000. Very good value
-Switchable graphics (details below) saves me some battery juice
-Speakers are adequate (not awesome but not crap)
-LCD screen is adequate (res. is 1366x768, not 1600x900 not 1920x1080. not a dealbreaker by far)
-ASUS expressgate is a neat and useful addition (instant-on OS for browsing web, music, chat and skype)
-keyboard layout is good, keys feel quite nice (chiclet) some may be annoyed by 0 key on numberpad (but at least there is one)
-Multi-touch touchpad is great (after getting used to it)
-USB 3.0!
-HDMI out (with audio)
Cons:
-No blu-ray (not a big deal, but would have been nice to pay $100 more for it, maybe traded usb3 for it)
-6-cell battery (would be nice to have a 9 cell)
-lid is a big magnet for my greasy fingerprints
-screen is a glossy finish (but matte screens are nearly extinct these days)
...but what about those switchable graphics?
This machine comes with intel HD integrated and a nvidia GT325M chip married by nvidia's Optimus Technology. What this does is it switches the graphics from integrated to discrete when a program needs it (games, HD youtube, etc). This allows power to be saved when I am just browsing the web or listening to music, while still allowing me to play games on this thing. Luckily, I bought this laptop about 4 months after release when most of the bugs had been zapped with the Optimus drivers. I highly recommend upgrading your nvidia drivers if you buy. Issues with Fallout3 and GTA4 (recent "old" games) were reported but should be fixed with the latest drivers.
...so what about dem gaems???
This machine is not a 15lb desktop replacement with dual 480's, but it plays games well. It plays Starcraft 2 on High (lags a bit on ultra). I am not an avid PC gaymer, but from what I have played it seems it will play most games at High or Medium settings. If you need more gaming details or fps go ask Google.
Summary: Good bang for my $$$, solid construction and performance, Good Battery, Decent Game Performance, Lacks blu-ray and a bigger battery. A great multimedia laptop.
decent but not great
while this machine has a very good package (i5, 4gb, nvidea 325) for the price point (about 1000-1200) there are a number of problems i had that caused me to return this laptop for another one. first there were some compatibility issues that weren't a problem with the drivers, updates, OS, etc. Skype does not recognize the native webcam that is installed on the computer and after talking with techs from both skype and ASUS there was no fix and i was unable to have video calls overseas. second, there appears to be some problems with the optimus technology and the toggling between the small intel GPU and the nvidea 325 GPU. Specifically, although i am not a serious gamer i do like to play the odd game and i was unable to play fallout 3 on the computer because upon installing the game it only recognizes the intel and NOT the nvidea GPU. so, the game does not even boot up because it does not have anough graphics capabilities. After checking online, this problem is not limited to fallout 3 and applies to other games as well. Finally, the keyboard is absolutely terrible (looks cheap, too much flex, noisy) and if you're one to use the arrow keys alot do not get this computer as they are so small that you constantly hit the other keys around them. other than these problems, the machine itself runs very quickly and powerfully; it was just not the right fit for what i want and there were absolutely no problems getting a full refund from amazon upon return of the merchandise.
