Customer Reviews
UL80VT
I bought this laptop from Amazon.ca just about a month ago now, and I really enjoy using it.
SIZE - 5/5
Perfect. It's really unbelievable how light this computer is. I had an old ASUS gaming laptop before this, and hauling it around was a pain to say the least. This thing? Don't even notice it in my bag.
BUILD - 4/5
Almost perfect. The screen is VERY thin. It was actually the thing I was most impressed about when I first opened the box. With the chiclet keyboard, I was sort of expecting a Mac-like feel, which isn't really the case. The keys are still nice to type on, but you have to press just a bit more than the traditional style laptop keyboards. Not hard to adjust to. Mouse pointer could use a little work however. Even with the cursor speed max'd out, I still finding myself wishing the cursor was able to be faster, or have a little more space for my finger. Mouse button needs lots of force to use, and while it is what I used to use on my old computer, I switched to the mousepad clicking because it was awkward to press. Other than that, computer feels solid and looks beautiful. I was getting lots of questions about it the minute I started bringing it out in class/study groups.
ASUS SOFTWARE -3/5
It's alright. I deleted most of it because it was either trial type software or other things were available for free which were better (ie there was a file sync program that just gets destroyed by Dropbox, etc). Power4Gear is actually very useful, and it's something that ASUS has used for a long time now, so I kept that. The ASUS linux pre boot is neat. It does boot really fast but I don't think it was meant for the widescreen because everything appears stretched. I'd really like to be able to use that button to boot a true version of linux, like Ubuntu, but as of yet I haven't figured out how. Also, with Windows 7 booting so quickly on this laptop anyways, I find myself just booting Win7 instead of the installed linux.
SPECS - 5/5
Great specs for such a small machine. Bought this one over the others because of the integrated video card and because I didn't want a 16" screen. Was really worth it. The video card takes some pressure off the comparatively low powered processor, which is great. If you're worried about the processor, DON'T BE! I was told by friends "don't get it; it'll take 7 seconds to load Google Chrome!" NOT THE CASE AT ALL. Browsing, word processing, and other everyday things do not stutter one bit. If you're loading games, yeah it'll take a long time, but that's not what you should be buying this computer to do. Lastly, don't think of it as a netbook. It's way too powerful to be that. With 4GB and the factory overclocked CPU, the only comparison would maybe be the portability. Oh yeah, Windows 7? Works fantastically on this machine, and on any machine! Don't let the Mac fanboys convince you otherwise. This computer is great and to get a Mac with similar specs would cost you 300-400 dollars more, which I was told "is worth it because you pay for better software". No, you pay a huge Apple markup, plain and simple, and this computer can compete with the Macbooks any day of the week. Discrete graphics work as advertised and it's really a cool thing to have on a laptop.
BATTERY LIFE 5/5
Just as advertised. I get 10hrs easily on an Entertainment setting with the screen turned down (it's so bright by default you almost have to turn it down). I don't even bother bringing my power cord everywhere anymore; I can work on this computer all day without it.
OVERALL 4/5
Just an outstanding computer. Mouse pointer knocked it down a star because it's something that you have to use all the time and it's a bit annoying. Solid overall build, processing speed is fine and it looks great. Battery life, portability and speed were what I was looking for, and I got it. If you find out how to install a second operating system that is able to use the existing linus power button, let me know!
exactly what i wanted
I chose this laptop because I wanted a thin-and-light for a good price! The size is perfect and battery life amazing. Love the chicklet keyboard. Touchpad works great but the buttons take a little more effort than they should. Previous reviews have complained about construction quality; it's definitely not a deal-breaker. You can push down the front panel a little. My main complaint is when switching power modes or unplugging the AC adaptor, the screen goes black and takes a few seconds to load. My only complaint. I highly recommend this computer. I'm a student so I mainly use it for watching DVDs, Internet, and Microsoft Office.
ASUS UL80VT review
Great size, very light weight and faster speed than I initially expected.
When I first started the computer, it crashed several times while windows was initially setting up and I had to install the recovery with the help of a wonderful customer service agent at ASUS. It actually froze while doing the recovery (and the hard drive clicked repeatedly before I manually shut it down) and after 2 attempts it finally reinstalled the recovery. Now The Trend Micro anti-virus software still points me to an error every start-up which is very annoying (it reminds me that the computer was improperly shut down etc. due to possible operating system problems).
Now, on start-up, the screen flashes between the blue windows screen and black quite a few times before settling on the windows login screen. After calling ASUS again, they assured me that this can be normal.
Other than these things, the computer works great! It has a very long battery life which has really been convenient so far. The optical drive has also been handy for using DVD's.
