great laptop for school and work
*Note I didn't buy this in Amazon but this is the same model and same system that I just recently bought at another Canadian online store*
I just upgraded to this laptop from my old Asus EeePC900.
Pro's:
1. SMALL FORM & LIGHT WEIGHT. - Despite the flaws of my EeePC900 I loved it for its size and portability. I was able to bring it anywhere from climbing mountains to going around the city. The same goes for the UL20A-A1. It's thin and the weight feels like carrying another book.
2. EXCELLENT BUILD & NO FINGER PRINTS. - I was kind of worried at first how the brushed aluminium and plastic bottom would fare. But all that disappeared once I opened my new notebook. The feel is just solid. The aluminium cover also keeps it from getting finger prints.
2. PERFECT KEYBOARD. I'm a touch typist and the full size "chiclet" keyboard makes my typing experience just so effortless.
3. EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE. It's fast. The dual core processor allows everything to load quickly. Moving from the Atom processor to the new INTEL CULV processors is a step-up from my old netbook. It makes loading windows 7 faster (takes me about 30-50 sec.)
4. EXCELLENT BATTERY LIFE. - I ran this notebook all night long unplugged half surfing the internet and doing some paper work and the other half idle (as I fell a sleep) lasted me a good 6.5-7 hrs on high performance mode. It's great to use even in school.
5. VERY QUIET. - No noise what so ever. The only time you will hear a sound is when you put your head next to it. And even then it's still not loud.
6. EXTRA WARRANTY. - The 1 year accidental warranty just sweetens the deal.
Con's:
1. ANNOYING TOUCHPAD.- I use my index finger to scroll the mouse I think many do and sometimes it could take an effort into moving it. I adjusted to it by using my thumb instead.
2. GLOSSY SCREEN. - unfortunately it is glossy and it does reflect. Thankfully it does not prevent you from being able to see what your typing or read what's on the screen.
OTHERS:
EXPRESS GATE - Is a great feature as I can easily access the net without going into Windows which doesn't even take me that long to access.
SUMMARY:
The UL20A-A1 is an excellent upgrade from the masters of the netbook(Asus). Just like the EEEPC it's light, portable, and has a even longer battery life. Unlike the EEEPC it is faster, has a bigger keyboard, firm build quality. Despite the downsides of having a very annoying touchpad and glossy screen the general experience just makes up for it. The added warranty that ASUS Provides even sweetens the deal and I doubt any other computer company provides that for free. The UL20A-A1 is a great balance between a notebook and a netbook. I don't think there is any other company that provides an option as good as this.

Lightning fast compared to the Atom CPU
LCD size feels bigger than what it really is, I think that is because the resolution is much higher than my netbook (ASUS 1000HE EEE PC) which is 1024x600. This is 1366x768 and everything looks much much better on it.
Can play HD YouTube smoothly even in power saving mode (with Flash 10.1)
Intel Wifi is amazing. I read reports of the Atheros card on the UL30A-A2 model having many problems but this is the best wifi card I have seen in a long time. Picks up signals that my 1000HE can't. Very pleased with the wifi quality on this machine.
Windows 7 64bit premium (not some gimped version)
Battery life is very close to the advertised, I get around ~6.5-7.5 depending on what I'm doing.
Comes with cable ties/Recovery discs/utility disc (although there is no DVD drive)
Speakers are better than expected, get much louder and more clear than my 1000HE netbook.
Express gate is OK, but needs a bit of work (IE making the resolution 1366x768 rather than some 800x600 awkward resolution)
Lid is much nicer than the glossy type on my old netbook, doesn't leave fingerprints everywhere
Solid "on" button, I know this sounds stupid but I hated the ON button on my netbook.
Cons
The X and C keys (and to some extend the alt key) on the keyboard make a little noise when you type, but its hardly worth complaining about, let alone doing an RMA for. My G15 makes 3x the noise when I type on it.
There is a fair amount of keyboard flex, but it really doesn't bother me that much.
Trackpad is so-so. Has a strange feeling to it, but works well enough if you don't have a mouse to go with it. (I had to uninstall the default track-pad drivers and install them from the synaptics website (synaptics.com) to get 2 finger scrolling etc)
Only 2GB of ram (Windows 7 sits at around 1.0-1.4GB used when booted up)
Weak graphical performance, but really, that's not why you buy this computer. It's not for gaming.
Comes with a bunch of Asus programs but I uninstalled about 3/4 of them. Asus' power saving modes are confusing, I stuck with default Windows 7 "Balanced" and it gives me the ~7h battery life. The Asus power saving mode cuts the color depth and makes the background pure white...yuck!
Glossy screen (rare to find a notebook without one)
Summary
Overall I am very happy with this machine, a worthy upgrade from my N280 Atom 1000HE. I was worried a bit that I wouldn't see a significant upgrade in speed but let me tell you, this thing absolutely kills the Atom CPU in every aspect. I am honestly blown away by these CULV processors. This particular model (SU7300) is dual core, and not hyper threading like some of the atom CPU's. I did notice that adding another 2GB of ram really did help out. For the record it has 2 DIMM slots, and only 1 is filled with a Hynix 2GB stick DDR2-800. I threw in another Buffalo 2GB DDR2-800 and had no issues whatsoever. There is a single hatch which allows access to HDD/RAM.
From the time you press the power button until windows starts loading is about 2-3 seconds.
Overall, this PC gets a big thumbs up from me.

Yesterday I installed a Intel X25-V SSD 40GB drive into my machine. I can't believe how much of a difference it makes. It is incredibly fast! Bootup/shutdown feels significantly faster, programs launch instantly. I can't believe I waited a month to buy one. Buy an SSD for your PC, trust me, it is totally worth it!
